Why does Burford need an archive?

To preserve Burford’s fascinating history, from mediaeval times, up to the present day.

In short, any history that is lost is irreplaceable.

This archive will preserve, and make available for research and display the wealth of ancient and contemporary material that is currently held in both private and institutional hands.

What will be archived?

The archive will include original documents from 1350 to the present, including:

• A lifetime collection donated by local historians, Raymond & Joan Moody
• Photographs
• Postcards
• Personal memorabilia
• Historical records of Burford’s many societies
• Correspondence
• Plans and maps
• We would also like to encourage the active recording of life in Burford today

In the future, we hope to digitise the archive.
